The Squad is here
Thursday's key ceremony was awesome. The family was so blessed. It is such an incredible experience to hand a key to someone for tangible and physical demonstration of grace and the gospel in a home. The family made us ceviche which everyone loved. The folks from Centerpoint were so sweet taking pics with us before they left. They will be missed.
Friday we had our first Friday Outreach Abi taught us how to make Burritos con Chorizo y Papas. We also brought a gallon of lemon flavored water and went to the local hospital. The families cannot go inside the hospital so there is a large crowd of people on the curb or in their cars just waiting or coming back and forth from getting prescriptions. The burritos were quickly taken and lots of people enjoyed the water. During the hour we were there myself, Ben, Rebecca, and Lauren played and sang worship songs. It was phenomenal how fast time flew. We could not believe it had been an hour when we packed up with no more burritos.
Saturday was supposed to be our day off but right before we left for the beach we got called by Osmar for an emergency. 4 of us had to get in work clothes and hop in a truck and a van. We drove 30 mins with Gerson, Darrel, and Annahie. While on the road we learned that a family that was supposed to receive a house this week had been deceived by the land lord. The owner of the plot had double sold the land so when YUGO dropped off the supplies at the concrete slab the other owner showed up with the police. It was so sad to have the family there helping us move the supplies from what was supposed to be there new home to the plot of a different family. They had no words. We will definitely be praying for that family to be able to resolve the issue or find a different plot in order to get a house this summer. I cannot imagine having such hope ripped away from you. When we got back we threw Grace a (successful) surprise party since here birthday was Monday and we would not have time to celebrate. Then Saturday night was dinner at the Willifords which was a blast especially with Taylor and Asher.
Sunday we went to YUGO Church which was again exactly what I needed to hear this week. It was incredible to have been praying about hearing from God and then hearing a convicting and encouraging message about that very thing from Cheko, who is the associate pastor of YUGO Church. We went out for some delicious Chinese food before spending some concentrated time preparing the campus for the teams to arrive. At 3pm sharp the first team arrive and it was ABF including my little bro and Gabe. At 5:45 we met our family. They are a precious family of 5 with a 13 year old, 7 year old and a 4 month old. They moved to Ensenada 3 years ago from Chiapas and are so thrilled to finally have a home. I spent an hour translating for the high schoolers to connect with them which was super sweet. They are great group of kids and I missed them a little. After dinner we went to chapel. When the interns were introduced I by far received the largest applause from my squad.
Today was the first day of construction with the team and it went incredible. Now its time to conk and get back to it tomorrow. Looking forward to hopefully connecting with the older son and dad about their faith tomorrow while we bang out the roof.
Crazy story about the land dispute. Will the family be able to get their stolen money back?
